Renting a golf cart on Isla Mujeres

There are many companies on Isla Mujeres that rent golf carts. Some would say too many; there are lots of complaints about the number of golf cars on the roads. It is very difficult for taxis and motorists as they are constantly held up behind lines of golf carts.

Anyone considering renting a golf cart should ensure that it is insured. Some renters have what is known as insurance of last resort, which means that they will pay out if the company fails to recover their costs from the renter. Usually they do recover any sums owed because they have the renter's documentation, which they won't release until they have received payment.

Any damage caused by the renter will not be cheap to repair. Some companies are fairer than others as to what they charge to repair damage. There is no reason why a golf cart should be damaged, but it is often due to the way it is driven. People on holiday seem to forget they are driving on a public road. Some of the major causes of accidents are when they make sudden U-turns without checking behind them, suddenly stopping, or seeing something of interest and turning without warning.

Then there is alcohol, which plays a part in many accidents. Mexico has a zero-tolerance policy. In most US states it is (80 mg/dL), so you can have a couple of beers without worrying. They do sometimes have alcohol checks for drivers leaving the center in the evening. It's not very scientific as the police officer will ask you to breathe into his cupped hands, and then he will breathe it in. People think it's a joke when you tell them this, but that is actually how they do it here.

Most golf carts have four seats, there are some larger vehicles but that accounts for the majority. It is not uncommon to see five or even six people on a golf cart, but if the police see this they stop the golf cart concerned and fine them. It's difficult to get away because the police are circulating all the time. If you have children, they often beg you to allow them to drive. It's very exciting for them, but it's risky, because if there was an accident you would be in real trouble. Also, it is another occasion where the police stop and fine the renter.

We have luxury rental properties at South Point, the most peaceful part of the island, so renting a golf cart is essential to get around and go into the center for dinner in the evenings. Not all guests rent golf carts; we have six guests in one property at the moment, they enjoy the pool during the day and get taxis into the center to dine in the evening. It is probably less expensive.
